DPS's history started in 1910 when the colonial Dutch Government establish N.V. Droogdook Maatschappij. Its establishment was intended to service Dutch's ship in Indonesia. Between 1942 and 1945, the company was managed by the Japanese Government under the name of Harima Zosen.
After its nationalization on January 1, 1961, N.V. Droogdook Maatschappij Soerabaja became a state company named PT. Dok dan Perkapalan Surabaya.

The 3rd Indonesia's Official Tri-Service Defence Event 
The Indonesian Department of Defence will once again host INDO DEFENCE 2008 Expo & Forum – widely recognised by the industry as the most successful International Tri-service Defence event in Indonesia from 19 - 22 November 2008. INDO DEFENCE 2008 Expo & Forum, the 3rd in its series, will host over 500 exhibitors from 40 countries and 20,000 delegates and trade visitors. This is on the back of the overwhelming success of INDO DEFENCE 2004 and 2006 which attracted the attendance of top military officials from Asia and Europe.
